Stories and highlights, what is the difference?
A story is temporary. It vanishes 24 hours after it was posted, and once it is gone no viewer or downloader can bring it back. A highlight is a story the account decided to keep. It sits in a round bubble under the profile bio, grouped under a cover image and a short title such as Travel, Recipes or Q and A.
That difference matters when you are browsing anonymously. Highlights tell you what an account cares about over months, while active stories tell you what is happening today. This page shows both in one place: the highlight covers saved on the profile, and every story that is currently live.
Instagram itself records who opens a story or a highlight while you are logged in, and the account owner can scroll that list at any time. Because this page runs the lookup from our servers with no account attached, there is nothing to record. Only public profiles are supported, so a private account's highlights remain private.
